What the retirement calculator does

The Accumulation mode grows current savings and recurring contributions using an assumed return and optional contribution growth. Drawdown mode applies returns and withdrawals to estimate whether a starting retirement balance lasts through the period you choose.

Information you can enter

  • Current age, retirement age, savings and monthly contributions
  • Expected return, inflation, contribution growth and compounding
  • Retirement spending, other monthly income, retirement length and withdrawal method

How to use it

  1. Use Accumulation to estimate the balance you may reach by retirement.
  2. Use Drawdown to enter the retirement balance, spending needs and other monthly income.
  3. Compare the nominal and inflation-adjusted projections and test alternative return, inflation and spending assumptions.

What can change the result

Investment return

Small changes in the assumed long-term return can create large differences over many years.

Inflation

Inflation reduces purchasing power and can increase the amount needed to support the same lifestyle.

Contribution and spending levels

More saving before retirement or a smaller spending gap during retirement can improve the modeled result.

Important: The calculator uses smooth assumed returns, not actual market sequences, and does not automatically model taxes, investment fees, required distributions or Social Security benefit rules.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate my Social Security benefit?

No. You can enter other monthly income in the drawdown section, but the tool does not calculate your official Social Security benefit.

What is the difference between nominal and today's dollars?

Nominal dollars are the future projected amount. Today's dollars adjust that projection for the inflation rate you enter.

Can the calculator predict market returns?

No. The return is an assumption you choose. Actual investments can gain or lose value and may not follow a steady rate.
